"Librarian by day, musher by night, Ilana first found out about
mushing while working as a summer instructor for the Voyageur Outward
Bound School in Ely, MN. For several years, Ilana and her husband
Greg Newby attended Voyageur's week long "Instructor Intro-to-Mushing"
trips. At Outward Bound, Ilana and Greg were lucky to meet and mush
with some of the last huskies from Mawson Station, Antartica. These
powerful, beautiful, and stinky Mawson dogs left a special spot
in Ilana's heart, and she began to adopt retired huskies from Outward
Bound.
When Ilana and Greg moved to Fairbanks,
AK with their five pet dogs, they purchased a house that came
with eight dogs. Ilana got involved with the Second Chance League,
a group dedicated to training unwanted sled dogs with the intent
to adopt them out. Ilana ended up adopting all of her fosters
